We had a guy from Kentucky who used to pronounce Hyperion just like I said in that post, so the whole corp started putting "ion" after every ship name, until he pronounced it right.
And even after that it kinda became a thing, so we never really stopped. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

Ibis seems like it should be pronounced "yih-biss"... and, no, we haven't figured out what planet I'm actually from, yet. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

Jessica Danikov wrote: Kitsune- given the eastern roots of Caldari nomenclature, it should be 'kit-soon-eh' (if you're trying to sound Japanese when you say it, you're doing it right). Same goes for Ishukone- 'ish-oo-cone-eh'. .
Kitsune is actually pronounced "keets-nay" if my limited understanding of Japanese is correct. I do know that it's not just a made-up name. A kitsune is a mischief demon that appears as a slightly anthropomorphic fox. (Tengus are also non-evil demons in Japanese lore... I own a tengu mask, and it's friggin cool).
However, "kit-soon" is a perfectly acceptable pronunciation. When you say it the way you suggested, you just sound like a poorly informed Inuyasha fangirl. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

With the exception of Thorax, Comet, Megathron, and a couple others, Gallente ships are all named after gods. And not all of them are Greek. For example, Ishkur is the Mesopotamian god of war, and Ishtar is from the defunct culture of an ancient micronation called Nineveh, in the Middle East. A goddess of something bad, although I can't remember exactly what, right now.
Erebus and Nyx are the names of the Ancients who gave birth to the Titans, who in turn gave birth to the Olympians. Those two pronunciations are a little dodgy.... learning about Greek mythology in one of my advanced classes in high school, the teacher was a white South African bloke who pronounced it "Err-ya-bus", and I'm in the habit of saying the name like that, to this day. As for Nyx.... "nix" seems to be correct, although enunciating the y is acceptable.
I'm not even close to knowing where in the nine circles of hell "Exequror" came from. For all I know, it may be a misspelling of "exchecquer", which is the UK version of the American IRS. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

I still think that the next Gallente hull that gets introduced needs to be named for a Zoroastrian god.... Ahuramazda would work.... That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

I need to go crack open one of my dusty old books on Gnostic Christianity. Gnostics recognized the existence of other gods, and their lore is where most of the angel and demon names came from (example: Azrael; angel of death...) There's some seriously cool stuff in Gnosticism. as I remember, the names they had for minor deities and demigods were pretty awesome. I'm pretty sure the English language unofficially abandoned pronouncing it as "heela", about 10 years ago. Kind of like how we've accepted "neanderthal" as the correct spelling, rather than the original "neandertal" (I'm stubborn, so I still spell it without the h.... and Pluto is still a planet). "Sleep-in-here"?
No, seriously.... Baneken has the right of it, on this one. To clairfy, it should be pronounced "Slaip-neer", for those who don't know how to say "ei" phonetically.
I get very mildly irritated when people give me crap about names with "ae". Example: Aedald system's name is supposed to be pronounced "ee-dald", kind of like the Amarr mothership is called an "ee-on". But there are those who tell me I'm wrong. I just wish we had more Brits in my Alliance to let Brusanan know that I'm right. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

One of the more common mistakes English native speakers make with Japanese words is to interpret a trailing e as a vowel modifier (ban -> bane) rather than its own syllable with the preceding consonant (ban -> 'ba-neh' ).
It's the "u" that makes the difference, there.... like in names like "Ryosuke".... you don't call the bloke "Rai-oh-soo-key".... it's "Ree-o-s'kay"..... see what I mean?
But, like I said.... for English-speakers, "Kit-soon" is perfectly acceptable, and even Japanese people won't make fun of you (too much) for saying it like that. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |
